Decorative Concrete in Calgary
A driveway, patio or walkway does not have to be a plain grey slab. Stamped patterns, exposed aggregate, integral colour and custom borders turn flatwork into the best-looking surface on the property — finished by hand, four generations deep, and built for Alberta winters.
Decorative concrete is one pour with a custom finish, not a different material. The base slab is built to the same Calgary-grade spec as any of our work — 32 MPa air-entrained mix, rebar, compacted base — and the look is added in the finishing window before it cures. Done by a crew that knows the timing, you get the appearance of stone or brick with the durability and low upkeep of concrete.
The two finishes most Calgary homeowners choose are exposed aggregate and stamped. Each has its own page below. The rest — patterned concrete, integral colour, custom borders, resealing — we mix and match to fit your home.
Decorative finishes we install
Exposed aggregate
$16–18 /sq ftNatural stone washed to the surface for a rugged texture and excellent winter grip — the most popular Calgary driveway finish. Standard or micro (pebble/sand) exposure.
Exposed aggregate →Stamped concrete
$18–20 /sq ftHand-stamped to mimic slate, stone, brick or wood plank. The most customisable finish, with a non-slip additive in the sealer for winter safety. Best on patios, borders and walkways.
Stamped patterns →Patterned concrete
CustomGrout lines or brick gaps drawn into the fresh pour to read like tile or brick — a lighter-touch alternative to full stamping, often paired with colour.
Ask about patterns →Integral colour
Add-onDye mixed into the concrete truck so colour runs through the whole slab, not just the surface. Pairs with stamping, release accents and borders.
Discuss colour →Custom borders
Add-onFrame an exposed aggregate slab with a stamped brick edge or a contrasting colour band to tie the hardscape into existing masonry and landscaping.
Design a border →Sealing & restoration
Every 2–3 yrsClean, prep and reseal existing decorative concrete to restore colour and block the moisture that causes freeze-thaw scaling. Keeps a patio looking new.
Book a reseal →Stamped vs. exposed aggregate
The two premium finishes do different jobs. The short version: aggregate for grip, stamped for looks.
| Feature | Exposed aggregate | Stamped concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Rugged, natural stone texture | Mimics slate, stone, brick or wood plank |
| Texture | Rougher — excellent natural grip | Smoother — needs a non-slip additive |
| Best for | Driveways, slopes, high-traffic areas | Patios, borders, walkways, accents |
| Winter safety | Grips on its own | Add Shark Grip to the sealer |
| Cost | $16–18 /sq ft | $18–20 /sq ft |
Many of our favourite projects combine both — an exposed aggregate driveway with a stamped brick border, or a stamped patio with an aggregate apron for traction at the steps.
What decorative concrete costs
Decorative finishes are a premium over a plain pour — specialised materials and hand-finishing — but cheaper and lower-maintenance than natural stone or pavers, with no weeding or re-levelling.
Final price moves with pattern complexity, colour and borders, slab size, existing concrete removal, and access. We quote it in writing, line by line, before starting.

Decorative concrete FAQ
What’s the difference between stamped concrete and exposed aggregate?
Both are premium finishes with different jobs. Stamped mimics slate, stone, brick or wood plank with a smoother sealed surface — best for patios, borders and walkways, but it needs a non-slip additive to be safe on ice. Exposed aggregate has a rugged stone texture with natural grip — best for driveways, slopes and high-traffic areas. Aggregate is the most popular Calgary driveway finish; stamped is the customisation favourite for patios.
Is stamped concrete slippery in winter?
It can be, because the sealer that enhances colour also smooths the surface. We fix that two ways: a non-slip additive (Shark Grip) mixed into the final sealer coat, and deeper stamp textures like heavy slate for more grip. Where safety matters most — steep steps or sloped driveways — we usually recommend exposed aggregate or a sand-matrix finish instead.
Can you match new concrete to my existing landscaping?
Yes, custom matching is the point of decorative work. Integral colour runs dye through the whole slab; release agents add antique accents during stamping; and custom borders frame the slab to tie into existing brick or stone. Whether you want a rustic wood-plank stamp or a clean cut-slate pattern, we design it to fit the home.
How much does decorative concrete cost in Calgary?
It is a premium over a plain pour. The tiers: brushed $12–14, exposed aggregate $16–18, and stamped $18–20 per square foot. Despite the higher start, decorative concrete usually beats natural stone or pavers over time — no weeding, no re-levelling. We give a written, line-item quote.
How often do I need to reseal it?
Every 2–3 years. Sealer keeps the colour from fading and, more importantly, blocks the water that freezes inside the pores and scales the surface. We offer cleaning, prep and resealing to bring an older patio or driveway back to new.
Do you do stamped patios and walkways, not just driveways?
Yes — patios, walkways, steps and borders. We can build in fire-pit zones, contrasting borders (aggregate centre with a stamped brick edge), and matching steps or retaining to tie the whole space together. See patios & decks and steps & staircases.
